Janis Joplin was one of the original iconic misfits, right at the centre of the hippy movement that followed the stifled decades of the 40's and 50's; so she came out when expressing raw emotion was still an act of rebellion. I love listening to her, as you can still hear the real expression and almost spontaneous outbursts of feelings in her singing.
