90s Revival: 'Nice Stems'

I have already been predicting a full-scale 90s revival here for a few months now ... and I want to remember the movie which captured the decade's penchant for preppy peppiness to perfection: Clueless (obvi!). From collar shirts, to knee high socks (set to the soundtrack of The Cranberries), the film definitively captured a sartorial moment in time.  

One of my favourite scenes in the entire film is when the camera pans in on Cher's perfect pins and white t-bar mary janes.

What's Cookin', Good Lookin'??

Spotted and made me smile: this print screen t of a young Johnny Depp (taken from the 90s camp classic Cry Baby) at the D&G Menswear Spring Summer 2011 collection. Then I clocked it again on French blogger Betty (of le Blog de Betty). We girls (and gays) can now all have a bit of Johnny to cherish! This the stuff teenage dreams were made of.

Less is More

Fashion, to a degree follows 20 year cycles (although some would say that as designers produce more and more collections such as cruise and resort, this vintage is decreasing). Nonetheless, this has made it inevitable that designers have been referencing the 90s for the past couple of seasons. As well as the grunge look that characterised Britpop and that was made famous by Marc Jacobs, the other seminal look of the decade was pared down minimalism, courtesy of Helmut Lang. This season sees the return of the cigarette pant: a slim, tapered cut which ends just at the ankle: a look made famous by Uma Thurman in 1994's Pulp Fiction. To make this work, think androgyny: so clean lines, and a masculine silhouette. During the day, wear with a super sharp (almost stiff, straightjacket material) white shirt and flat brogues in a completely monochrome palette, or pair with heels and a sheer vest top for a cocktail party alternative.

Trend Forecast: the 90s

Fashion, they say, goes in 20 year cycles so that means that the time is ripe for a 90's revival. We can already see this creeping into designers mentalities: firstly, parkas began to reappear on the catwalks and are being marketed at the moment as an essential festival cover up. Then we have the new black and white Calvin Klein advertisements starring Lara Stone, which are a direct echo of the iconic CK1 campaign which featured Kate Moss at her heroin chic best. Finally, the models for Alexander Wang's latest collection sported greasy-look slicked back hair....anyone remember grunge?

The kids of the 90s grew up with Brit pop battles (Blur v Oasis); a grunge aesthetic (Marc Jacobs, Nirvana) and plenty of teen drama (Dawson's Creek, My So Called Life). Let's take Dawson's Creek, so far removed from the polished glamour of Gossip Girl. What happened to the teenagers we grew up with? Well, there was Dawson (the geeky, repressed one) who let it all out in the film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's 'The Rules of Attraction'. Then there was little Joey Potter (the hot tomboy unaware of how smoking she was even though she hooked up with all the boys in the cast at some point-even the gay one) who went on to marry her childhood pin up. All the girls loved Pacey (the hot one) and of course he is now dating the uber stylish Diane Kruger. Lastly there was Jen (the quirky indie one) whose success has been overshadowed by the death of Heath Ledger, with whom she had a child. Stylish they were not, but what they lacked in fashion sense they made up for with plenty of angst: the ultimate 90's style accessory

It hasn't quite made a full comeback yet, but it is on its way so Watch this space!!!!!
